Neb. lawmaker introduces health exchange bill (AP)

LINCOLN, Neb. ? Nebraska would establish a state-based health benefit exchange under new legislation that would help the state comply with the Obama administration's health care law.

The measure (LB 835) by Omaha Sen. Jeremy Nordquist seeks to increase access to affordable, quality health care coverage, reduce the number of uninsured in Nebraska and increase the availability of private health coverage to individuals and small businesses.

The bill would create a governing board to allow for stakeholder input. Nebraska hospital advocates have said they support a state-based exchange, as opposed to one that is run regionally or by the federal government.

Such exchanges are meant to offer a one-stop-shop for Americans to buy health insurance. They must be federally certified by January 2013, operational by 2014 and self-sustaining by 2015.
