Stephanie Vanderslice: What Is Creative Writing Anyway?

On February 4, 2012 in the Huffington Post, this group of six creative writers and teachers answered some basic questions about creative writing, literature, and the relationship between teaching and learning. We felt it especially important to include multiple perspectives and welcomed the lively conversation. You can read that piece here.

The comments to that post, along with some other responses online, raised additional questions that deserve answers. As we get ready for our field's upcoming annual national meeting in Chicago, the Association of Writers and Writing Programs 2012 Conference, we thought we'd share more of what we do in creative writing programs and why we think they're not the bane of contemporary literature but, rather, good for writers, higher education, and culture.

How is creative writing like other disciplines in universities? And how is it different?

TIM MAYERS: Creative writing, like other disciplines, is a way of knowing. Patrick Bizzaro argues that creative writing has an "epistemology," or its own distinctive way of encountering language and the world. It is an approach that focuses on how things are put together, always entertaining the possibility that things might be put together differently.

DINTY W. MOORE: Part of what we're up against in this conversation is the popular notion that creative writing classes consist of celebrated writers lecturing the kids about how exactly it should be done. Anyone who thinks that's what we're doing in classrooms today is stuck back in the 1960s.

ANNA LEAHY: Creative writing is a discipline of practice, one that's akin to studio art, in which emerging artists learn about art of the past and the science behind color complementarity and paint components but also grow to understand composition, color, and paint characteristics by actually painting. Creative writing shares this prioritizing of practice with medical programs, too, in which book learning is combined with working with patients. During their education, visual artists, doctors, and creative writers learn the habits of mind of the field they are entering. For example, in creative writing, the question of how a text means--how a story makes meaning, how a poem is put together, how a change alters the effect of the words--is more central than what a text means.

DIANNE DONNELLY: Writers gather anecdotes, bits of conversation, observations, field notes, reflections, research. They synthesize material, flesh out details, make connections, remediate or reshape images and text. These creative processes lead to insights--discoveries that occur through the active practice of writing and problem solving. Scientists proceed through similar creative processes: preparation, incubation, illumination. While the creative processes of creative writers and scientists may proceed along the same lines, the practices of creative writing are not associated with certainty, with exactness, with a formulaic methodology of systematic questioning and replication that is located in the scientific realm.

TOM HUNLEY: A biologist studying bacteria through a microscope, a criminologist examining the demographics of homicide offenders, and an economist seeking ways to reduce the national debt--all of these share with poets and fiction writers the "rage for order" that Wallace Stevens spoke of in his poem "The Idea of Order at Key West." Like students in other disciplines, our students are entering into a long conversation in which they become immersed so that they can add something of substance.

Writers don't need a degree in creative writing to publish, so why is the academy a good place for creative writing to be fostered?

TOM HUNLEY: Why do health enthusiasts join gyms? Why do religious people gather in churches? A university is one place where writers can be with folks who share their passions and can offer encouragement and support.

ANNA LEAHY: Creative writing could be considered an aspect of an individual's lifestyle, like gym membership or religious affiliation, and each might be considered more meaningful with regular practice, but exercise, religious belief, and writing are not really analogous pursuits. It's also unfair to assume that mainstream book publication is the singular goal for creative writing programs. Even if it were, not all students who pursue a career stick with it. In fact, a Huffington Post piece points out that the attrition rate of schoolteachers within the first five years is almost 50%. I don't know anyone in my field who asserts that writers need a degree to publish, nor that a degree promises publication. We do talk about and model how those who want a writing life, regardless of publication timelines, can stick with that life.

DINTY W. MOORE: The degree is marginally helpful if you want a teaching career, but the true value of an arts degree is that it offers a young artist time and space and a community to grow. Can you do this on your own, perhaps attending a writing center discussion on weekends or workshopping with a local writing group? Sure, you can, and if it fits your life and goals, you should. But creative writing programs facilitate the process, and often offer up a modest living stipend to boot.

STEPHANIE VANDERSLICE: The academy is far from perfect--and we argue for ways it might be revised in books like Rethinking Creative Writing in Higher Education, Establishing Creative Writing Studies as an Academic Discipline, and (Re)Writing Craft--but it's the best mechanism we have to bring people who care about the subject together to attend to the next generation of writers. Certainly there are writers that emerge outside of it--Dave Eggers and Chuck Pahlaniuk come to mind--but academia provides a fertile soil.

TIM MAYERS: I think it's even bigger. Universities and colleges are hubs within this nation's--and the world's--intellectual culture. Creative writers should be immersed in the debates and discoveries in other fields: in philosophy, in theology, in theoretical physics, in neuroscience and artificial intelligence. There's no better place for interaction among different disciplines than a college or university. Poets and fiction writers (at least some of them) also need the community of each other, just as the Shelleys (Mary Wollstonecraft and Percy Bysshe) and Byron did when they headed a literary community in Lake Geneva and Hemingway and Fitzgerald did under Gertrude Stein's tutelage in 1920's Paris. Today's creative writing programs have simply formalized those salons.

What's the difference between an undergraduate degree in creative writing, an MFA, and a PhD?

ANNA LEAHY: I've completed creative writing degrees on all levels, mostly because I craved time to develop, regardless of what I'd end up doing for a living. Programs vary widely, but each degree made sense for who I was at the time and helped me develop. The Association of Writers and Writing Programs' The Director's Handbook is a great resource for general principles, including distinctions between undergraduate programs, which tend to be steeped in this country's ideals of a well-rounded liberal education, and graduate programs.

STEPHANIE VANDERSLICE: Undergraduate degrees in creative writing are necessarily more taught. They should focus on what beginning writers need to know, a foundation of the elements of writing to engage a reader, how deploy craft to various effects. They also need to dismantle myths that most novice writers bring to college--for example, that writing is "easy" for "real" writers, that there's a one-size-fits-all approach to the process--and teach various ways into subject matter. Those who pursue an undergraduate degree may go on for advanced degrees or into any number of creative fields. We should respect that desire with a varied undergraduate curriculum, including digital media production, editing, publishing, and so on. MFA students are those who have self-selected to pursue their writing intensely for a period of time (and hopefully afterward) and who want to hasten its development by focusing on writing as an art. Though the MFA is a terminal degree that includes a thesis, those who pursue a Ph.D. (like me) have often decided they want to teach in academia and specialize in the theory and/or pedagogy of creative writing.

DIANNE DONNELLY: Differences among programs are influenced also by institutional requirements, objectives, and economic realities. Generally, undergraduate programs introduce important writerly and readerly concepts. Even here, there are further program delineations, which consider the ways students acquire knowledge at beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. The introductory course, for instance, often covers more than one genre.

TIM MAYERS: Rather than focusing on degree programs, I would like to address undergraduate creative writing courses. A significant number of such courses exist not as part of any degree program per se, but as options or electives within English majors--or in some cases as parts of larger writing programs that also include technical writing, business writing, journalism, etc. These creative writing courses can accomplish many things, the most important of which is that they give students a glimpse of what it's like to try to make fiction and poetry, as opposed to merely deciphering their meanings, as many literature courses do.

What's the relationship between talent, creativity, determination, and other qualities of successful creative writers, and what does that have to do with creative writing programs at colleges and universities?

STEPHANIE VANDERSLICE: Writer Fred Lebron, speaking at the 2009 Association of Writing Programs Conference, said, "Writing is a war of attrition. Don't attrish." In a world that's rather inhospitable to people who want to lavish their attention to becoming artists, to devoting years of their lives to this process, it's my job to show students how to sustain their writing lives no matter what they end up doing for a living. We talk about this in my classes: What's your plan? How will you keep going as a writer during times when no one cares that you're doing it except you? Writing is a marathon, not a sprint.

DINTY W. MOORE: Students bring their own creativity and determination, though these can be nurtured, encouraged, and strengthened with a good teacher and serious, committed fellow students. Talent may be inborn, but talent is often just one of the deciding factors. For many working artists, determination makes the difference in the end.

TIM MAYERS: Recent books by David Shenk, Malcolm Gladwell, and Steven Johnson make the case that talent is far more a matter of relentless practice and preparation--nurtured and supported, especially when people are very young--than an innate quality or gift. Good creative writing programs and teachers make this abundantly clear to aspiring writers. I suspect that many of the writers who went through creative writing programs, but years later claim that these programs can't really teach people anything, have forgotten how their own persistence and determination were sparked in classrooms and professors' offices.

DIANNE DONNELLY: Doesn't each quality inform the other? In other words, writers who are determined tend to (1) immerse themselves in the practices of writing, (2) develop a reading acumen that reflects a breadth and depth of writing styles, (3) become observers of the world and the human condition, and (4) seek not only factual information, as Michael Meehan says, but "texture" so that they create an "insider" sense of foreign, unfamiliar, past, or future environments.

TOM HUNLEY: Louis Pasteur put it best when he said, "In the fields of observation, chance favors only the trained mind." Unless Arnold Palmer put it best when he said, "The more I practice, the luckier I get." The world--and creative writing--is full of talented people who never accomplish much. I can't teach anyone to be any more talented than they already are, but I can light a fire under them, I can design a rigorous course of study and model a good work ethic, and I can coax each student's best writing out.

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich declined Friday to outright reject a new law legalizing same-sex marriage in Washington state, saying if it is approved by voters it will at least be enacted "the right way."

The former House speaker's comments came on a visit to the state Capitol where he also met privately with Republican legislators. Washington's Democratic governor signed the gay marriage bill last week and it will take effect in June unless opponents can gather enough signatures to force a fall referendum.

Gingrich cited the possibility of a public vote in appraising the hot-button issue, noting that judges have authorized same-sex marriage in other places.

"I think at least they're doing it the right way, which is going through voters, giving them a chance to vote and not having a handful of judges arbitrarily impose their will," Gingrich said.

A November referendum is not guaranteed. Opponents of the Washington law need more than 120,000 valid voter signatures needed by June 6 to put the law on hold pending a referendum.

Gingrich made clear he opposes gay marriage personally and would vote no on such a referendum if one ever came up in his home state.

His posture was different than rival Rick Santorum, who campaigned in Washington the same day the law was signed.

Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, questioned the effectiveness of having states decide the definition of marriage. He supports a federal constitutional amendment making marriage exclusively between a man and a woman.

"I think that at least from my perspective it tends to water down marriage instead of encouraging men and women to form healthy marriages, and that to me should be the objective of the government because that is in the best interests of our society," Santorum said after a meeting with church leaders organizing a ballot drive to block the Washington law from taking hold.

Washington state has had domestic partnership laws since 2007, and in 2009 passed an "everything but marriage" expansion of that law, which was ultimately upheld by voters after a referendum challenge.

Minnesota and North Carolina have measures on upcoming ballots to write gay marriage bans into their state constitutions. And same-sex marriage opponents in Maryland have taken the first steps to bring legislation legalizing gay marriage passed by the state's Legislature this week to a voter referendum on the November ballot.

Gingrich has spent two days campaigning in Washington ahead of the state's March 3 caucuses. He heads Saturday to San Francisco for a speech to the California GOP convention, where he said he'll dissect President Barack Obama's latest energy address "paragraph by paragraph."

Seal of the United States Department of Justice

Image via Wikipedia

On Oct. 14, a federal judge blocked key portions of Alabama?s new immigration law after several groups, including the Obama Justice Department and the ACLU, asked for an injunction.

The Justice Department claims that states that assist in enforcing federal immigration laws are violating the Constitutional separation of powers.

Really? If that?s so, I wonder if state police in Alabama are barred from arresting someone trying to pass counterfeit $100 bills, since it?s federal currency. Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution gives Congress the power ?to provide for the Punishment of counterfeiting the Securities and current Coin of the United States.? It doesn?t say anything about state troopers.

Likewise, Article I, Sec. 8 of the Constitution authorizes Congress ?to establish an uniform Rule of Naturalization.? State police arresting illegal aliens has nothing to do with deciding who can be naturalized.

?Does it really cause harm to the United States when a state informs the federal government of persons who are in violation of federal law, and then leaves it to the federal government to decide whether to initiate deportation proceedings?? Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange wrote in the state?s response.

(AP) ? As millions watched the sequin-clad samba dancers at Rio de Janeiro's iconic Carnival parade Sunday, at least a few eyes turned toward the stars, or at least toward the VIP boxes hosting celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez and Fergie.

The Carnival parade has been attracting top celebrities for much of its 80 years. Many are brought in by attention-hungry Brazilian advertisers hoping to share some of the glow of the world's biggest party.

This year, beer company Brahma was promoting Lopez, while hair care company Head and Shoulders hosted Fergie. Neither planned to actually parade in the all-night-long event, but J.Lo waved to the crowd from the posh VIP seats at the Sambadrome as 13 samba schools joined in a fierce, sweaty competition before tens of thousands inside and many more watching at home on television.

The numbers of top-tier celebrities in attendance has grown as Brazil's star has risen ? particularly since the South American giant was chosen to host the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 summer Olympics.

Recent guests at the two-day-long parade have included Madonna, Beyonce, Jude Law, Paris Hilton, Pamela Anderson and Kevin Spacey.

Spectators at the Sambadrome were split over the presence of celebrities at Carnival.

"I honestly couldn't care less if there are famous people or not," said Monica Linsay, a 23-year-old university student at the Sambadrome for the first time. "I don't care about marketing ploys. I'm here to watch the parade."

And there is much to watch: Samba soloists who shake into overdrive as soon as the cameras turn on them; dancers dressed as Teletubbies on drugs; ambulatory American flags; psychedelic flamingos, complete with stilt legs; vertically challenged jokers brandishing jumbo soccer balls; belly dancers. And that was just one single samba school.

Spectator Ligia Santos said she was happy about the celebrity presence.

"It doesn't matter that these foreign celebrities don't know how to samba or even how the parade works," the retiree said. "It's excellent they're here because it means we're sharing the beauty we have here out to the world. They're going to be bowled over by what we have."

Celebs are generally not expected to learn to samba or take part in the parade: Their work consists in watching from their sponsor's "camarote," the plush, multistory VIP lounges with catered buffets and free-flowing alcohol, as well as on-staff makeup artists and masseuses.

But it's not all fun and games for the celebrity guests, who are generally hired to star in special, Carnival-themed TV commercials. A Brahma beer ad featuring J.Lo dancing in a fair imitation of samba's frenetic footwork has been playing here for weeks.

In an interview appearing in the gossip magazine Quem, the commercial's director, Heitor Dhalias, said Lopez picked up samba's notoriously complicated steps in minutes.

"On the day of the shoot, Jennifer arrived, went to makeup and then learned to samba in half an hour," Dhalias was quoted as saying. "She has this Latin swing, and it was really easy for her to learn."

A rival beer company, Devassa, ran a commercial showing three sloppy, overweight Brazilian men worshipping at the slippered feet of a silk-robe-clad Hugh Hefner.

Hefner was missing the festivities. Brazilian news media said the 85-year-old Playboy founder bowed out at the last minute due to health problems. His youngest son, 21-year-old Cooper Hefner, took his place, accompanied by six Playmates.

Actor Richard Dean Anderson, who played the ingenious secret agent MacGyver on the 1980s TV show, was the headline guest in Salvador, the northeastern city with Brazil's second-largest Carnival celebrations.

"Goodness, what an event, what a celebration!" he wrote on his Twitter account.

A host of local celebrities also fill out the VIP lounges. This year's crop of local A-listers was to include soccer star Ronaldinho Gaucho and singer Daniela Mercury.

Franc Farewell: France bids adieu to former money (AP)

[unable to retrieve full-text content]AP - Six centuries after the first one was minted and a decade after they went out of circulation, the last French francs are being exchanged for euros, severing France's final link to its former national currency. The franc's end, however, comes as the euro suffers the worst crisis since its creation.

Whitney Houston's Rise and Fall: Lessons for Small Business Owners

Whitney Houston?s meteoric rise as a young star and her long, slow downfall offer life lessons for all of us. Sadly, her battle with addictions, which may have played a role in her death, threaten to overshadow her incredible talent and many accomplishments.

Whitney Houston

Whitney reeled off a record seven consecutive number one singles, won six Grammy Awards, sold tens of millions of CDs, and inspired a generation of singers. Her version of ?The Star Spangled Banner? sung before the 1991 Super Bowl will forever be the standard by which others are judged. Later, Whitney branched out into films and found success on the silver screen.

Her life became a case of perhaps achieving too much, too soon, and offers important lessons for young people pursuing a career in entertainment or any other industry, for that matter.

There are plenty of things that small business owners can learn from Whitney Houston?s life:

? There is danger in accomplishing too much too soon. Sadly, Whitney Houston became accustomed to the celebrity lifestyle that often includes drug use. Having too much money at too young an age can be dangerous. The lesson for small business owners is that while your startup may be booming, don?t let early success cloud your judgment. Your company may be flush with cash ? from a VC, startup loan, your own savings, or your revenues ? but don?t spend it extravagantly or foolishly.

? Invest in your talent. Years of drug and alcohol abuse damaged Whitney Houston?s golden voice. She squandered the great talent she had been given. Small business owners should take heed. If you have talented individuals working for your company, nurture them, invest in them. Keep that talent as long as you can. It will benefit you business ? and your employee personally ? in the long term.

? Branching into related fields can reap tremendous rewards. Once she had conquered the pop charts, Whitney Houston made a successful transition into films, notably with The Bodyguard, a 1992 film that grossed $121 million at the box office. The starring role wasn?t that much of a stretch from her core strength; Whitney played a strong willed music superstar. Entrepreneurs should look for opportunities to expand into related businesses, but remember not to divert too far from their core competencies.

? Know your strengths and weaknesses. Certainly, Whitney Houston was aware of her great talents, but she also realized that she made poor judgments. While recent interviews indicated that the singer understood that her demons hurt her, she simply couldn?t overcome them. Small business owners need to self-assess. Always understand and nurture the qualities that make your company successful. Equally important is the ability to recognize your weaknesses and devote your energy to overcoming them.

? Your personal life matters. Whitney Houston?s stormy relationship with husband Bobby Brown took its toll on her life and career. Small business owners must assess their own work-life balance, refrain from overextending themselves at the expense of their relationships, and avoid relying on bad habits when things don?t go well.

Entrepreneurs who start successful small businesses watch them grow and flourish. If a company is strong enough, it may outlast its founder. Often these enterprises become successful big corporations. Hopefully, Whitney Houston?s enormous talents will outlast the memories of her sad demise. Her life is now a cautionary tale for anyone who dreams of building something big and leaving a meaningful legacy.

Report: Philly should consider selling gas company (AP)

PHILADELPHIA ? A consulting company has recommended that Philadelphia officials consider selling the city's municipally owned gas company to a private entity.

Mayor Michael Nutter released a report Monday that indicates selling Philadelphia Gas Works could yield a profit of $146 million to $496 million under the best-case scenario.

The sale would include conditions such as honoring current employee contracts and keeping the corporate headquarters in Philadelphia for a period.

The report says the sale process could take about two years. It would require state approval.

Gas Works spokesman Barry O'Sullivan says the utility has transformed itself in recent years from a financially troubled company into an attractive business. It has more than 1,600 employees.

The cash-strapped city asked Lazard to evaluate the options for the utility in July 2010.

Lensbaby Edge 80 Optic brings a slice of tilt-shift to your life (sample photos)

C'mon, admit it -- if you won one of many lotteries, you'd be purchasing a legitimate tilt-shift lens right after picking up a new Ferrari and buying a chocolate factory. Given that said scenario is highly unlikely to pan out, Lensbaby is stepping in to make the letdown a bit easier to stomach. The Edge 80 Optic is the latest in the outfit's growing Optic Swap system, which is compatible with the Composer Pro, Composer, Muse, Scout and Control Freak, and it's capable of transforming those bodies into "a tilt lens that delivers a slice of sharp focus through an image that falls off to a soft blur." There's a 12-blade adjustable aperture (f/2.8 through f/22), and when not shifted, it's fully capable of taking flat (read: standard) photographs. As the name implies, there's an 80mm focal length, but macro lovers should be aware that you'll need at least 17-inches to focus on your subject(s).

We've been toying with one on our D3S over the past few days, and it certainly does what it says; moreover, it's far easier to justify at just $300. (For those unaware, dedicated T-S lenses can easily top $1,500.) And if you're already invested in the Optic Swap system, it makes even more sense. Granted, it takes some work to compose a shot. You'll need to rely on manual mode, and you'll need to tweak your ISO to match your desired aperture and available light. Leaving the ISO too high while using f/2.8 in broad daylight will result in white captures, while not boosting the ISO enough after dark will leave your shot murdered out. Once you've got your settings right, though, the lens couldn't be easier to operate, and the shift + lock mechanism is as smooth as butter. We threw together a gallery of our favorites taken recently in Hawaii and French Polynesia, so dive in below to see if this piece of kit is deserving of your attention.

Bell & Howell Apple II Plus appears on eBay, like a foundling carved out of onyx

Bell & Howell Apple II Plus appears on eBay, like a foundling carved out of onyx
You wouldn't know it by the never ending barrage of black PowerBook's throughout the '90s, or even the onyx MacBooks in the mid-00s, but dark-clad casings from Apple were pretty much non-existent until Cupertino got serious about laptops, excluding of course the ill-fated Macintosh TV. Exempt from the prevailing 'Snow White' design ethos however, were clones machines sold by other companies, like the Bell & Howell's variant of the Apple ][ Plus above. Per Wikipedia, the machine in question was only available through educational channels, notable for its A/V outputs (which you can espy after the break) especially for that purpose. Typical eBay caveats apply, with the buyer selling the machine "as is" -- read sans power supply -- but we can't imagine it'll be long before an Apple collector swoops in and steals the pooch. More pics and your chance to bid on a piece of history await at the source below.

Photographer Captures Worlds in a Drop of Water (LiveScience.com)

Markus Reugels can capture the world in a drop of water, not to mention Venus, Mars and the moon. Reugels is a floor installer and hobbyist photographer in Marktsteinach, Germany, but "hobby" doesn't begin to convey the beauty and precision of his photographs of images reflected in tiny, perfect globes of water.

LiveScience caught up with Reugels via email to find out how he creates his photographs and why he likes working with liquids.

LiveScience: These photographs are amazing. How did you get into photography, and why did you start working with water droplets?

Reugels: I started photography about three years ago. At the beginning, I only wanted to?take good pictures for the family album. But with time, it grew into a hobby. I learned everything I know by myself, so I read [posts] in many photo communities. In this way, found a thread about water-drop photography. The pictures inspired me to test it, but it was so fascinating for me that I went further and further.

How do you create the refraction images?

This is basically very simple. I place a picture behind the falling drop,?and in the drop the picture will be shown as the refraction. You must?place the picture upside down, because the refractions are mirrored. The?hardest part is to set the light well. Poor light can destroy the picture.??[See Reugels' water-drop photos]

The goal is to bring depth into the drop, so that the picture is not flat.

How much time do you estimate it takes to create a single perfect?refraction shot? How many shots fail for every one that succeeds?

It can take one hour to get the right settings, and then to adjust the timing?for the perfect shape and position of the picture. Sometimes I must take?over 100 pictures to get the one perfect shot ?? but I always have something I want to improve, so the pictures are only nearly perfect!

You also create beautiful images with bubbles, jets and droplets of?water by themselves. How do you make these images?

These are all different techniques of water-drop shots. The basic "Drop on?Drop" pictures are made with two drops. The first drop falls into the tray?and forms a crater, then a crown, and at last a pillar. On the pillar, the second drop must be timed exactly to create shapes that look like mushrooms, hats or flying discs.

Last year, I found a way to produce jumping spouts. There is a special technique to make splashes about 10 to 15 centimeters high (4 to 5.5 inches). I didn't want to tell how, but when you show good results, other people will make them, too. After a time, some people have come to know my secret and I have released it. Since this, people around the world make such "XXL splashes."

The bubbles are very hard to reproduce. The first drop must be very big so that the impact of the drop will form a bubble, and through the bubble goes a pillar. [The Science of Bursting Bubbles]

Tell me about your 'Shoot 'Em Up' series, which involves shooting pellets through droplets of water. It looks like quite the mix of?fire and water.

The Shoot 'Em Up Series is more a technical gamble. It's very hard to get?the action of a pellet shot and the silence of the water drop under one?hat. The picture must be well balanced.

It's more of a technical hurdle to realize these pictures. But in two or three pictures I have handled the composition very well, so I'm always trying to make?some new ones!

You also have a series of photographs called "Cream Flow." How are these made?

These pictures are very easy to make. I use only a little aquarium and a?pipette to make such shots. When you drop a single droplet of milk or?cream into the water, it sinks in such shapes. Here, you can play with?lots of things, more drops, colored milk and cream, etc. You must only push the trigger and set the light. The pictures are always great.

What is it that you enjoy about photography, and especially this type?of photography?

The most impressive thing about high-speed photography is the fact that?you don't know what you're going to get. Every time creates a different result, even if you use the?same settings as the last series. There are so many factors that will?influence the result. I'm always amazed by some of the pictures.

And the best thing behind such photos is to show that a world that we can't see?with the eyes, such as moments in a life of a water drop, can be so?beautiful. It's impressive!

Some people think such pictures are only possible with a technical?timing device. That's not the whole truth. It's only the key to realize such shots. I know many people with the same or better gear, and they?make poor pictures. When you have tried to make such pictures on your own, you understand the effort and patience behind the picture.

But I need a balance for this very technical photography, so I love to?make photos with old manual lenses. Here you must have time to set the?aperture, the focus and settings on the camera. This is pure photography, and the old lenses make really good pictures.

What other techniques would you like to experiment with?

Maybe in the future I will go deeper into portrait photography and wedding?photography, but I don't know. The most important thing is to have fun?with the camera. I don't know how long I will go with the drops, but at this time, I have lots of fire for this passion.
