Getty ImagesNow that the Dolphins don?t have a head coach and owner Stephen Ross reportedly wants a star and only a handful of guys who have won Super Bowls are available, Bill Cowher?s name naturally has surfaced at the top of the list.
Former Dolphins quarterback and current Cowher CBS colleague Dan Marino thinks Cowher won?t be coaching the Dolphins, or any team for that matter.
?I would love to see him be the Dolphins coach or if he wanted to coach again because it would be great for the NFL, but I don?t think his mindset is that he wants to coach again,? Marino told Dolphins.com, via NFL.com.? ?And he may change that over time now, but my feeling is that, you know, he?s a pretty straightforward . . . guy that tells the ? kind of ? the truth most of the time, I would say ? or no, all the time ? and he said on TV that he doesn?t have any plans of coming back, and I believe him.?
Marino?s hesitation to call Cowher truthful ?all the time? was a bit odd, especially since it wasn?t said in jest or sarcastically.? Still, the fact remains that Cowher at no time has said unequivocally that he won?t be coaching in 2012.? Instead, Cowher has said only that he doesn?t ?plan? to coach and that he ?plans? to return to CBS.
Well, plans can change.
As to the Dolphins job, Cowher?s plans likely won?t change because G.M. Jeff Ireland continues to be employed by the team.? Three years ago, the courtship of Cowher by the Jets ended quickly once it became clear that G.M. Mike Tannenbaum would neither give up his job nor his final say over the roster.
Still, with each passing year Cowher risks sliding off the ?A? list.? For now, Cowher?s there ? primarily because he hasn?t said with sufficient clarity that he doesn?t want to be.

Thematic potency and cinematic virtuosity -- the production was designed by Dante Ferretti and photographed by Robert Richardson -- can't conceal a deadly inertness at the film's core.
For all the wizardry on display, Hugo often feels like a film about magic instead of a magical film...
I have seen the future of 3-D moviemaking, and it belongs to Martin Scorsese, unlikely as that may sound.
It's a fairy tale for mature viewers, but the airy exterior hides emotional depth.
A dreamy triumph for Scorsese
The film demands patience from children and adults alike -- in fact, it's simply too slow for young viewers -- but like great literature, if you immerse yourself in it, the rewards are plentiful.
As a crazy mix of Cinema Paradiso, Cronos and David Copperfield it's unusually stimulating family fare.
The man responsible for Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and GoodFellas has tackled his first family film. Not only that: it's in 3-D, and a must-see for anyone who loves cinema.
The heart-shaped story may be the key that sets Hugo in motion, but this rediscovery of the cin?ma de papa is most memorable for its technical wizardry and astonishing visual trickery.
Scorsese's regular production designer Dante Ferretti has outdone himself with this set, and I can understand the desire to show it off, but this is the first time I've felt a closer attachment to one of his sets than the people who are on it.
It is glorious to be thrown and blown about in this make-believe metropolis. The digitally enhanced shapes and colours suggest Jeunet and Caro reworked by a polychromatic Piranesi.
As soon as the lights went up in the theater, I told my viewing companions that I honestly felt that seeing the film was a privilege.
[T]here's certainly much to admire here... [but] Hugo feels like two very different films inelegantly spliced together...
It's possible to see the attraction, but when people break into applause over the credits, some are going to be left cold.
It's a deeply felt piece of work, something which only Scorsese could have brought to the screen...
Beautifully photographed and well acted but the storyline, especially when Kingsley's character takes center stage, is tediously tiring
Martin Scorsese unleashes his devotion to the magic of movies with a zeal that is enchanting.?
For youngsters with a secret sense of wonder about how the world works, Scorsese is offering a golden key to a limitless world of make-believe.
A masterpiece of visual storytelling and a heartfelt homage to the industry that Scorsese has triumphantly made his own.
Beautifully made and superbly acted, Hugo features terrific 3D effects and stands as a charming love letter to silent cinema, but it's let down by a weak central plot and the script never quite connects on an emotional level.
It might be curtains for celluloid, but Scorsese, a boyish 69, clearly isn't leaving the stage any time soon. He directs every film with the passion of his first. And it shows.
Director Martin Scorsese's well-documented affection for all things cinema has never been more evident than in the enchanting and imaginative Hugo.

Space Washing Machine Could Blast Laundry with Microwaves (SPACE.com)
Imagine putting dirty clothes into a washing machine, leaving, and only coming back once the freshly cleaned clothes have been dried out by microwaves. That out-of-this-world-laundry concept could someday become a reality for astronauts and space explorers headed for the moon, asteroids or Mars.
Such a washing machine is designed to clean dirty astronaut clothing inside a sealed plastic bag that can also receive a drying blast of microwaves. The simple one-step process represents an energy- and water-efficient solution that spares space travelers from hauling a water-intensive washing machine up into space or bringing along disposable clothing.
Astronauts aboard the International Space Station can get by with specially engineered, stink-free underwear and steady resupply missions launched from Earth. But longer-lasting missions beyond the moon won't have such luxuries.
"On a long-duration mission to Mars you won't have resupply ? you either have to fly naked or have a washing machine," said William Michalek, project manager at the UMPQUA Research Company. "I haven't heard of them flying naked, and I don't think that's really an option."
NASA recently chose UMPQUA's washing-machine concept as part of its selection of Small Business Innovative Research proposals eligible to receive up to $125,000 in early funding.
An earlier version of UMPQUA's machine avoids making the foamy mixture of detergent, water and air ? something that would be troublesome to handle in the seemingly weightless space environment. The company also faced the challenge of washing clothes without the tumbling or back-and-forth action of typical washing machines that require Earth's gravity to work.
"We developed a system of water jets inside a plastic bag with clothes and water and no air," Michalek told InnovationNewsDaily. "The jets would bend the clothes back and forth to work the soap solution through all the fibers."
The water only enters the plastic bag through connected tubes after all the air has been sucked out first. Once cleaning is done, the clothes stay in the bag within a larger chamber as a microwave generator irradiates them ? similar to heating up a microwave meal inside a Tupperware container.
Finally, a tumble cycle uses air jets to make any space laundry extra soft. The design conveniently saves astronauts time they might normally spend switching wet clothes from a washer to a separate dryer.
UMPQUA plans to make a more energy- and water-efficient version of its device with the new NASA funding. It also wants to vaporize some of the water with outside vacuum pressure on the bag in order to temporarily free up more room inside the bag during the cleaning process ? a concept it must prove within the next six months.
The company originally worked with Westinghouse, a home-appliances manufacturer, on the microwave-drying concept. That could still find its way into commercial washing machines on Earth, Michalek said.
But Westinghouse didn't like the idea of a combined washing and drying machine because it doesn't allow people to simultaneously wash and dry big loads of laundry quickly, even if it might be more time-efficient for astronauts' purposes.
So when might people on Earth see a water-efficient washing machine that combines both cleaning and drying?
"When we get to the point where we're wearing dirty clothes because we don't have enough water to wash them," Michalek said.

Obama urges Congress to pass payroll tax cut (AP)
WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama says Congress should pass a payroll tax cut before their end-of-the year break, and he's raising the possibility that "we can all spend Christmas here together."
Obama made the comments Friday at an event on energy efficiency.
The president says he'll keep pushing Congress to approve the payroll tax cut. He says now is not the time to slam the brakes on the economy, but it's "time to step on the gas."
The government just reported that the unemployment rate fell to 8.6 percent in November, down from 9 percent in October. That's the lowest since March 2009.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) ? Penn State will conduct a wide-open search for a new football coach and focus on candidates with characteristics including honesty and integrity, the school's new president said.
The Nittany Lions need a new leader after Hall of Famer Joe Paterno was fired in his 46th season after child sex abuse charges were filed against former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.
"As we go out to search for a head football coach, one of the first and foremost criteria is how that person would fit into the value system of Penn State, which clearly has to be honesty, integrity and commitment to excellence in academics," president Rod Erickson said Thursday in an interview with The Associated Press.
Erickson had said Wednesday night after a campus town hall forum that he hoped to have a new coach in place by the time No. 23 Penn State (9-3) plays its bowl game. The postseason destination should be announced this weekend.
Erickson cited the school's success in graduating athletes, an achievement championed by Paterno, who has a library named after him on campus.
But the scandal also tarnished the reputation of a football program that once proudly boasted the slogan "Success with Honor."
Sandusky, who drew up the "Linebacker U." defensive schemes for Paterno, was charged Nov. 5 with sexually abusing eight boys over a 15-year span. The ex-assistant coach has acknowledged that he showered with boys but denied molesting them.
Paterno, the Division I leader with 409 career victories, announced his retirement effective the end of the season on the morning of Nov. 9 amid mounting criticism that school officials should have done more to respond to allegations of alleged abuse. Despite the announcement, school trustees fired Paterno about 12 hours later.
Paterno is not a target of the investigation.
Longtime assistant Tom Bradley, who is 1-2 since taking over on an interim basis, has expressed interest in keeping the job full time. Some critics have said the next coach should have no previous ties to Penn State given the scandal.
Erickson maintained the search was "wide open" when asked if he would rule out anyone with a Penn State connection, but declined comment on any specific candidate. Acting athletic director David Joyner is heading a six-person search committee for a replacement.

Samsung Indulge (Cricket Wireless)
The Samsung Indulge ($309.99 direct) is Samsung's first smartphone?for Cricket Wireless. We reviewed the Samsung?Galaxy Indulge?over on MetroPCS ($199, 3.5 stars), which is essentially identical to the Indulge on Cricket. That makes us think it should be one of the better smartphones in Cricket's lineup.
On the positive side, the Indulge is powered by a 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor, so it should be up to speed for most tasks you can throw at it. It runs Android 2.2.1 (Froyo), which is two steps behind the current smartphone version of Android, 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). But it should still be compatible with most of the 250,000+ apps in the Android Market.
For a device that costs more than $300, the Indulge is suffering from some lower-end hardware choices. The 3.5-inch display, for instance, features a relatively low 320-by-480 resolution and looked a bit dim and grainy on the Galaxy Indulge we reviewed. The body of the phone felt a bit cheap and plasticky as well. But there's a slide-out, four-row physical keyboard, which makes the Indulge ideal for frequent texters.
The phone should also be a good media player, and comes with a 3.2-megapixel camera that can record VGA video.
The Indulge runs on Cricket's 3G network, which works on the 850-, 1,900-, and 1,700-MHz bands, depending upon your location. Coverage is somewhat limited, so make sure to check the maps at?http://www.mycricket.com/coverage/maps/wireless before buying in.
Lower-end components aside, the Samsung Indulge is the most powerful smartphone you can buy on Cricket Wireless right now.
